    Day 2: Palermo, Sicily - Tour Begins

    Day 3: Palermo - Monreale - Agrigento
      LANGUAGE DISCOVERY: Today, your Tour Manager will help you discover the origin and history of the language(s) you will experience on your tour along with key words and phrases that will help you communicate with the locals. A Palermo cultural tour features the lovely squares of Quattro Canti, Piazza Pretoria and Piazza Bellini. From ancient times to the present day, the Valley of the Temples’ ruins, landscape flora and colors have inspired poets, writers and painters.     Day 5: Agrigento - Piazza Armerina - Giardini-Naxos
      Depart Agrigento today and travel to the central part of Sicily, arriving in the town of Piazza Armerina. Here you pay homage to the Roman past at Villa Casale, which houses one of the most incredible collections of ancient mosaics in the world. Later, visit Mt. Etna Volcano National Park to see the spectacular landscapes sculpted by nature. Arrive in Giardini Naxos, the “garden of Sicily” and your home for the next two nights.

    Day 3: Oahu
      This morning depart for Pearl Harbor, where you will view a short documentary on the “Day of Infamy” at the Visitor’s Center. Afterwards, travel by Naval launch to the USS Arizona Memorial and step into the past to learn about the tragic events of December 7, 1941. After this poignant experience, take a city tour of Honolulu highlighting the historic Iolani Palace, the impressive state Capitol building, and the moving National Cemetery of the Pacific, known as the Punchbowl. Tonight take a short stroll to enjoy a fantastic Pikake seafood buffet followed by a music show. The Society of Seven Show is a must-see musical revue that has been voted the “Best Show in Waikiki”. Dr. Jamieson Ridenhour will lead you on a series of walking tours through the two thousand-year-old center of culture and empire: London, greatest of literary cities.
    The tour includes a series of literary-themed walks. Visit the house Keats lived in (featured in the new film Bright Star) and then walk over Hampstead Heath and see views across London. Follow in the footsteps of Charles Dickens and see the areas of the city that inspired his greatest works.

    Walk the south bank of the Thames and see Shakespeare's old haunts - the cathedral where he worshipped and the Globe Theatre itself. Eat and drink at the George Inn, the last remaining coaching inn where Dickens, Johnson, and Shakespeare himself enjoyed a meal and a pint.

    Wander through central London's history-rich streets, past St. Paul's Cathedral, Trafalgar Square (and St. Martin's church where Handel performed), and Covent Garden Market.

    Walk down Baker Street and visit 221B, the fictional address of Sherlock Holmes, and lose yourself in the twisting streets of the East End, infamous site of Jack the Ripper's 1888 exploits.

    Built into the tour are also large amounts of free time for you to plan your own excursions and see any of the thousands of sights and events available in one of the world's great cities.

Jamieson Ridenhour is a scolar of Victorian and Gothic literature, and a specialist on literacy representations of London in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He has written a book-length study of London in Victorian Gothic literature and given lectures on London, Charles Dickens, and Victorian culture and art at various venues in the United States and England. Dr. Ridenhour is a writer, scholar and humanities professor living in Bismarck, ND, when he's not able to walk around London.

    Day 1 - Monday, June 14: Overnight Flight
      Welcome to Italy, a land rich in history, culture, art and romance. Your journey begins with an overnight flight to Rome, "The Eternal City."

    Day 2 - Tuesday, June 15: Rome, Italy - Tour Begins
      You arrive in Rome today. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a special welcome dinner at a popular local restaurant featuring regional delicacies and fine Italian wines. Today dinner will be included.

    Day 3 - Wednesday, June 16: Rome - Vatican City - Papal Audience
      This morning, visit Vatican City to attend the weekly papal audience* and receive the blessing given by His Holiness, Benedict XVI. Later, visit St. Peter’s Basilica, built on the site where St. Peter was martyred. Known as the grandest of the world’s churches, St. Peter’s is unsurpassed in beauty. In the Vatican Museum* you will view such historical treasures as the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s restored mural of the Last Judgment. Today breakfast will be included.

    Day 4 - Thursday, June 17: Rome
      This morning enjoy a locally guided panoramic tour of Rome featuring the impressive Piazza Venezia, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and the famous Trevi Fountain.     Day 5 - Friday, June 18: Rome - Assisi - Perugia
      LANGUAGE DISCOVERY: Today, your Tour Manager will help you discover the origin and history of the language(s) you will experience on your tour along with key words and phrases that will help you communicate with the locals. Today you are off to Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis. Take a guided walking tour of the old city, including the Basilica of St. Francis. Then, travel to medieval Perugia, the historic capital of Umbria. Here you will behold one of the grandest squares in Italy, the Piazza IV Novembre, and delight in the medieval palaces and ornate cathedrals. Today breakfast and dinner will be included.

    Day 6 - Saturday, June 19: Perugia - Siena - Florance
      A scenic journey through Tuscany’s graceful low-lying hills brings you to the mystical city of Siena. You will be delighted by its narrow Gothic streets, magnificent palaces and historic Piazza del Campo. Upon arrival in Florence, visit a family-owned leather shop and learn the traditional Italian techniques of leather making. Today breakfast and dinner will be included.

    Day 7 - Sunday, June 20: Florence
      In Florence, the “Cradle of Italian Renaissance,” visit the world-famous Academy Gallery to see Michelangelo’s incredible Statue of David. During your cultural tour of Florence, you'll also view the Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore, the Palazzo Vecchio, and the Church of Santa Croce, burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli. The remainder of the day is at leisure to enjoy this fascinating city on your own. Today breakfast will be included.

    Day 8 - Monday, June 21: Florence - Padua - Venice
      Today you journey through central Italy to the medieval city of Padua to view the impressive six-domed Saints Basilica, dedicated to St. Anthony. Then it is on to the canal-laden city of Venice. This enchanting city was built on 117 tiny islands and is characterized by a latticework of 150 canals and 400 bridges. Today breakfast and dinner will be included.

    Day 9 - June 22: Venice - Murano Island - Venice
      Your day begins with a boat trip* (weather permitting) to Murano Island for an up-close glass making demonstration. Next, return to Venice and visit charming St. Mark’s Square, the lively hub of the city's activity and events. A local expert will guide you on a walking tour of the area featuring St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, and the Clock Tower with its famous Moors.     Day 10 - Wednesday, June 23: Venice - Trento - Oberammergau, Germany
      Today you make the scenic journey to the Bavarian village of Oberammergau. En route, travel through the majestic Dolomites with a special stop made in the Alpine town of Trento. During your visit, stroll the quaint streets and admire the artistic heritage of this Renaissance-inspired center. Today breakfast and dinner will be included.

    Day 11 - Thursday, June 24: Oberammergau - Passion Play
      The morning is at leisure for you to explore this lovely village. This afternoon, witness a performance of the Passion Play. The original performance dates back to 1634. During the Thirty Year War, the village of Oberammergau was spared the Black Plague and for this reason, the villagers vowed that every ten years they would give a play to honor the life of Christ. The performers are native Oberammergauers. To lend authenticity to the performance, the cast start to grow their hair and beards more than a year in advance. Also, the intricate costumes are made locally by the villagers. During the break in the performance, join your fellow travelers for a farewell dinner celebrating the end of a memorable trip. Today breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be included.

Board the Sierra Railroad, built in 1897, and view unspoiled scenery, relax in luxurious cars and enjoy a fabulous lunch. Later today, travel to Sonora. In its Gold Rush heyday, Sonora was the cosmopolitan city of 1848, attracting people from all over the world. Today lunch will be included.

    Day 4 - Wednesday, June 23: Sonora - Yosemite - Sonora
      A scenic drive brings you into the awe-inspiring Yosemite National Park. Your tour through Yosemite’s amazing waterfalls, unique rock formations, deep valleys, Alpine meadows and pristine wilderness will leave you absolutely awestruck. Today breakfast and dinner will be included.

    Day 5 - Thursday, June 24: Sonora - Jamestown - Sacramento
      Travel to Jamestown to visit Railtown, an 1897 state historic park featuring turn-of-the-century locomotives and railcars. A popular spot for movie makers, “High Noon,” “The Virginian,” and Petticoat Junction” were filmed here. Arrive in Sacramento where a local guide introduces you to this beautiful city, including Sutter’s Fort, the historic Governor’s Mansion where Ronald Reagan once resided, and the State Capitol building. Then continue through Old Sacramento’s historical district with over 60 restored gold rush era buildings, wooden sidewalks, cobblestone streets and antique gas lamps for a glimpse at what life was like when thousands of “49ers” flocked here during the California Gold Rush. This evening you will enjoy a fine dining experience on the Delta King. This stationary restaurant on the Sacramento River is an authentic 285 foot riverboat, christened in 1927.     Day 6 - Friday, June 25: Sacramento - Lake Tahoe - Sacramento
      Travel over the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the resort gambling town of Lake Tahoe. Upon arrival, enjoy a narrated cruise of spectacular Lake Tahoe aboard the M. S. Dixie II paddlewheeler.     Day 7 - June 26: Sacramento - Woodland - Sacramento
      Travel to Woodland and board the Sacramento River Train to experience a “Great Train Robbery” complete with a Cowboy BBQ picnic-style lunch by the river. The Sacramento River Train boasts a sparkling gold interior reflecting the area’s Gold Rush heritage and follows a scenic route along the Sacramento River. En route, be on the lookout for robbers and gunfighters!! Return to Sacramento for leisure time to relax, revisit Old Sacramento or visit the renowned Railroad Museum on your own.     Day 8 - Sunday, June 27: Sacramento - Napa Valley - Ft. Bragg
      Arriving in Napa Valley, board the Napa Valley Wine Train, a splendidly restored 1915 Pullman car, and travel through the picturesque Napa Valley.       The 121 year old Skunk Train is considered one of the best scenic trains in North America.
